IMPULSE: debut group exhibition

     "IMPULSE"

    22 APRIL - 22 JULY

  • "IMPULSE GALLERY IS DEDICATED TO BEING A PLATFORM BOTH PHYSICALLY AND VIRTUALLY FOR ARTISTS TO CONVEY THEIR CRAFTS AND STORIES"

"Acting as a platform that moves across physical and virtual spaces, Impulse Gallery engages with an art industry that is in constant flux, expanding our reach to those who share our love for art worldwide. In a time where human interactions are constantly being renegotiated, where art and its appreciation take on different forms and media, it is with great pleasure and excitement that we at Impulse Gallery present to you the virtual version of our first group exhibition « IMPULSE ». The works play with the contrasting planes of the real and surreal, with virtuality and actuality, allowing us to bring you – from wherever you are – just a bit closer to our artists here in Lucerne."

ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE IMMERSED AND TO FEEL THE CREATIVE IMPETUS WE WISH TO CREATE.

Our first exhibition introduces you to a diverse group of established and upcoming artists. While our ten artists greatly differ from one another in terms of media and approach, their commonalities are found in the balance between their instinctive, spontaneous yet detailed artistic processes that result in the originality of their individual styles. Their art as a discursive space reconfiguring the lines between human and nature, darkness and light, between reality and fantasy, comes together as a symphony of sensations. Regardless of the materiality and textuality of these works, all of our artists have a gift of conveying stories through their craft, allowing the viewers’ minds to travel and interact with art that reinvents the way we see and perceive.

  • DYLAN GEBBIA-RICHARDS

« THE EXCITEMENT OF DISCOVERING SOMETHING ENTIRELY N IN THE MIST OF THE UNKNOWN »

Colorado-based artist Dylan Gebbia-Richards, brings insight into his transcendent works in which the organic is appropriated by the artificial. Inspired by fractals - or the 'expanding symmetry' seen at all scales in the patterns of the natural world, from river deltas down to the microscopic arrangements of veins in our body -Dylan has created a number of colossal organic wax sculptures which pay homage to these observable patterns. His works, with their technicolour palette, create an inviting synthetic environment which in delight, disorientate, and ultimately consume the viewer.

    MAXIM WAKULTSCHIK

« WITH LOVE FOR DETAIL »

Belarusian Artist Maxim Wakultschik started his artistic journey at the Art Academy of Düsseldorf from where he has created an impressive international following ever since. Wakultschik's art consists of mathematically precise and accurate constructions that create formal order from a chaos of independent elements. In his complex and multilayered objects, he explores the interplay between light and shadow, surface structure, and colour vibration. Focusing on the effect of the reflection of the ambient light, results in oscillating variations of reality that constantly challenge us to a proactive approach.

    Marc Lagrange

« I always shoot, even with my eyes closed »

Filled with longing and sensuality, Marc Lagrange’s photographs celebrate fantasies and desire—placing beauty and dreams at the center of his world. Lagrange was born in Kinshasa, Congo, in 1957. His career path led him from engineering to photography, and his creativity from fashion to art. His giant Polaroids—which have been exhibited worldwide—are a powerful example of his craft as well as his attention to detail: he can display the texture of skin, highlight natural curves and make his models stand out.

    Claudia Limacher

« My art shows the realm of life and makes the invisible visible for the viewer to get lost in their own perception »

Born and raised in Germany, Claudia Limacher has lived most of her life in accord with nature, attuned to its gentle yet unrelenting strength. With her art, she makes tangible the interplay between woods, lakes, mountains, and the lives that dwell in their spaces, opening a space in which the viewer gets lost in their own perception. Layers of acrylics, oil paint, spray paint, pure pigments, and pastels come together in the haze of vision, cultivating a space of meditation - a moment of slowness in a contemporary cult of speed - where an abstract passion leads the viewer to the organic forms of nature to then guide us into the space of the surreal that temporarily interrupts all boundaries of the senses and blurs all lines between interiority and exteriority.

  • Lu Luo, « I see patience, perseverance, and light »

    Lu Luo

« I see patience, perseverance, and light »

Known for her use of traditional Chinese costumes and vibrant textiles, Lu Luo encounters the canvas as a stage upon which stories come together, woven into a colourful tapestry through which narratives of identity and expression are felt in the intricacies of texture.

Born in Sichuan, China, Lu grew up in the midst of the hustle and bustle of an opera house, joining her parents and their theatre group during their tours around the province. Inspired by the fervour of Chinese opera, Lu often applies elements of the visual and formal language of its gestures and costumes, physically intertwining and recontextualising the traditional garments into her art as the substance of drama to empower and rethink the notions of femininity, nationality, mediality, and belonging.

  • Wim Ricourt, « My art is about love in broadest sense of the word »

    Wim Ricourt

« My art is about love in broadest sense of the word »

The intricate nature of Belgium-born artist Wim Ricourt's oeuvre stems from the details he finds in everyday life where everything and anything can and will be subject to boundless creation, part of Ricourt's form of poetry. Ricourt's love for the poetic shows in the composition of his work as carried on by the cadence of lyrics, driven by the spontaneity and intention of a poetic phrase.

Using the unconventional combination of water-based paint  and oil paint, Ricourt plays with the discrepancy between the two. This tension of contrast rooted in the materiality of his canvas is established on the shimmering aluminium that makes the surface: a cold material upon which Ricourt breathes warmth found in the balance of seeming opposites. From a distance, his images seem to be totally clear, but one feels irresistibly drawn closer to the canvas and finds themselves immersed in a dynamic collage.

    Alan Kingsbury

« It's the subtle brush of oil that brings calmness to the eye »

Born in London and currently residing in West Cornwall, Kingsbury started producing works in oils from the age of nine. After studying psychology and art history, he got an internship at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice in 1983. Subsequently, as a cataloguer of modern paintings for Bonhams Auctioneers, he viewed many thousands of paintings and gained a real understanding of detail and effect.

It was in 1986 when he moved to Venice and painted outdoor oil sketches in varying light conditions as a full-time artist. His wonderful techniques in oil painting developed over decades have brought him numerous solo exhibitions over the years, and he has exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, The New English Art Club, and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.

  • Tian Yong-hua, « A play of colour and shapes; a display of my imagination »

    Tian Yong-hua

« A play of colour and shapes; a display of my imagination »

Born in Yibin (Sichuan Province, China), Tian Yong Hua started out as a photographer creating thought-provoking dialogues around the topics of identity and belonging. Now, after continuously developing his work, Tian has reached a new height of his technology-driven art, making visible the complexities of the intersection between the actual and the virtual space.

At the heart of his work, the question of subjectivity remains as one of 'being' constantly in the process of becoming, drifting in the chaos of the currents that surround us. Blurring the lines between surface and the notions of power, value, thought, and consciousness, Tian plays with the tensions of superficiality, materiality, and contrast in his sculptures.
