In Bunnies and in Colour: Hunt Slonem and Annemarie Terlage

Bringing a freewheeling sense of awe, wonder, and detail to his wild array of paintings and sculptures, NYC-based artist Hunt Slonem is considered one of the great colorists of his time.

As vibrant a dresser (favouring bright jackets and ties) and decorator (known for his keen eye for refurbishing homes and pairing vintage furniture with contemporary art) as he is a painter and sculptor, the Maine-born creative force of nature is well known for his neo-expressionist works of butterflies, rabbits and tropical birds, the latter often inspired by the 30 to 100 exotic feathered friends he houses at any given time in an aviary in his 30,000 square foot Manhattan studio.

Slonem has had over 300 one-man shows in galleries and museums internationally. His work is also in the permanent collections of 250 museums including the Guggenheim, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney, and the Moreau Foundation, and is part of private collections all over the world, including those of many celebrities. Just over 40 years since he moved to New York, and 37 years since his first solo show at the Harold Reed Gallery, the ever-entrepreneurial Slonem continues in whirlwind mode.

Annemarie Terlage (b. 1967 in the Netherlands) distinguishes herself as a painter of the classical type. After graduating in 1991 from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, she has lived and worked from the city in her small studio ever since.

Annemarie Terlage composes landscapes, and architectural settings through her unique experimental approach of mixing epoxy and acrylic paint on canvas. The subjects of her works are based on personal memories aided by old picture postcards and childhood albums. The array of lush landscapes and compositions capture a dreamy delicacy of colours within resolute lines that create the amazing element of the depth of space. The balance not only results from a trained painter’s eye but was developed parallel with the intricate study of the material qualities of epoxy and acrylic paint. Occasionally, Terlage applies an almost hallucinating glow in the dark pallets to scenes which spurs from her memories of night strips in the US.

Dreams, memories, and visions of an ideal world inspired her new recent series of monumental paintings; reminiscent images of modern villa’s surrounded by lush gardens and beautifully illuminated pools seem to invite the onlooker to wander in her wanderlust.
